A Clinical Study of Breast Abscess


Abstract
The incidence of breast abscess has been gradually decreasing because of the development and liberal use of antibiotics, improved life style greater. Knowledge about health on the part of patients and greater care and nursing of neonates. Nevertheless breast abscessis occasion-ally found in clinics and effects the physical and psychological health of mother and baby.
The author reviewed total 47 cases in order to observe the clinical characteristics of breast abscess in Pusan. Each case had been treated by incision, drainage and with antibiotics at 11 Sin Women¢¥s Hospital during from March 1975 to February 1976.
The following results were obtained.
1. The incidence of breast abscess among the total number of patients who delivered babies in the year was 0.6% of the patients with breast abscess, 75% were primipara.
2. The highest, incidence by age was in 21 to 30 years old group (72.3%). The most frequent site of abscess was in the upper inner quadrant of the breast.
3. About 68% of the patients studied visited the hospital for treatment within one week of the development of symptoms.
4. In 40% of cases the interval between the time of delivery and the onset of symptoms was within one month.
5. The most important etiological organism was found to be staphylococcus in 72% of cases.
6. The duration from the incision, and drainage to the time of healing averaged 10-days. 7. Antibiotics were given after incision, and drainage in 59.6% of cases.
